Are Supplements Necessary For The Ketogenic Diet?

November 28, 2017

The answer is a qualified, ‘Yes!’

But before we qualify the above affirmative answer, perhaps one should be more knowledgeable about what a ketogenic diet is.  It is essentially a high-fat, adequate protein, low-carbohydrate diet that eventually forces the body to burn fats rather than carbohydrates.  Hence, since carb intake is rather restricted, the diet eventually leads the body to burn fat as an energy source, ideally resulting to weight loss.

Most people and diet aficionados, however, are at a loss as to whether supplements are needed for the ketogenic diet.  As this article makes clear, supplements are indeed needed primarily because the dieters may at times experience what is called the ‘keto flu.’ In such cases, supplements can help the body whether such an episode.

But what supplements should a person undergoing a ketogenic diet take?  Here are five:

ELECTROLYTES.

Sports drink anyone?  Believe it or not, supplementing the body with sodium, magnesium and potassium is essential when carb intake is reduced.  By doing so, the chance of a dieter experiencing cramping, fatigue and headaches will be lessened—thus, making the ketogenic diet experience easier to undertake, if not a bit more comfortable.

CAFFEINE.

How about some coffee, tea or caffeinated drink? Supplementing with caffeine is ideal when one is undertaking a ketogenic diet.  This is not in any way related to nutrition, but rather on how caffeine can help a dieter go through the process of dieting.  It has been noted that the physical movements and reflexes of dieters tend to slow down during the first few days of dieting.  Supplementing with caffeine can help dieters overcome the perceived slowdown.

COCONUT OIL AND OMEGA 3.

When undertaking the ketogenic diet, dieters must eventually increase or transition to a diet high in fat.  By supplementing with coconut oil, dieters can take advantage of this great fuel source for the brain and the muscles during the early phases of the diet.  Also known as MCT Oil or medium-chain triglycerides, coconut oil is quite versatile and can be introduced to one’s diet in many ways either through cooking or as an ingredient in smoothies, salad dressings etc.

Another oil that may prove helpful for people undertaking the ketogenic diet is Omega 3.  Also known as ‘fish oil,’ it is ideal as a protection for inflammatory diseases, cardiovascular disease and improved health and skin conditions.

FIBER.

Lastly, fiber supplements may be considered essential for people undertaking the ketogenic diet.  Indeed, fiber gives you that feeling of fullness and satisfaction that helps when one is dieting.  Moreover, fiber helps  cleanse the body of toxins that may contribute to diseases and debilitating conditions.

Fortunately, there are a lot of excellent sources of fiber that are available today.  One such product is Fibermaxx.  It is made from psyllium fiber and comes in convenient powder form that can easily be mixed with hot or cold beverages that makes it easier to ingest.  They come in 255 gram jars and is good for 36 servings.

So, are you ready for the ketogenic diet?  It’s easier than you think.  Try it now but be sure to combine it with supplements for a great weight loss experience.
